After more than 30 years in surgical and medical paediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus, Mr. Chandna has chosen to focus his extensive experience on specialist non-surgical care for the following conditions in children and adults. I offer both remote and in person consultations.
Childhood and Adult Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI)
I specialize in assessing and managing cerebral visual impairment (CVI) in both children and adults, particularly those with early brain damage. For children, CVI often requires tailored interventions to address visual challenges at home, school, and in the community. These interventions are designed to support visual impairment in accordance with developmental milestones, school participation, and day-to-day functioning. In contrast, adults with CVI face different, often more complex habilitation needs, including navigating work environments, mobility challenges, and social integration.
To diagnose and manage CVI, I conduct comprehensive assessments that include detailed history-taking, eye examinations, and validated functional vision evaluations—remotely or in person. Expert reports—providing certification of visual impairment and outlining functional vision challenges—are provided to support real-world interventions. These reports can be shared with schools, teachers of visually impaired students, employers, or sports authorities to ensure strategies are applied effectively in everyday settings.
A collaborative approach is encouraged, with families, educators, orientation and mobility specialists, and myself working together. The focus remains on the patient’s best interests, ensuring that each intervention plan is tailored to the unique needs of the individual, whether a child or adult.
For children, intervention plans are crafted in active collaboration with parents and older children, ensuring they align with the child’s age-appropriate needs while considering family setup, community engagement, and educational environment. This ensures that the child’s visual needs are consistently addressed, with regular adjustments made to optimize progress.
For adults, intervention plans focus on enhancing independence, work efficiency, and safe navigation in daily life. Adults generally implement many strategies independently, with support from carers, family members, or friends. Teachers of visually impaired adults, alongside orientation and mobility specialists, play an important role in providing methods and aids to link visual strategies with adult life. Regular reviews ensure continued effectiveness and progress.
Childhood and Adult Strabismus and Amblyopia
I offer comprehensive evaluation and management of strabismus and amblyopia in both children and adults. With over three decades of surgical experience, I now focus exclusively on non-surgical solutions within my defined scope of practice.
My treatments are personalized and may include options such as patching, prism correction, and custom corrective lenses, which help to improve eye alignment, binocular function, and visual comfort. These interventions are particularly useful in the early stages of treatment and for managing symptoms such as eye strain and double vision.
In addition to treating primary strabismus and amblyopia, I also manage strabismus and diplopia resulting from strokes, traumatic injuries, or neurological conditions. These cases often require thorough evaluation and continuous monitoring, with treatment plans adjusted as the patient’s condition evolves during recovery.
While my practice is focused on non-surgical interventions, I am skilled at recognizing when surgical intervention is necessary. In such cases, I provide guidance and facilitate referrals to the appropriate surgical specialists. My approach is centered on offering the most effective treatment options tailored to the individual, ensuring optimal visual outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for both children and adults.
Medical Legal and Expert Reports
I provide comprehensive Medical Legal and Expert Reports for both children and adults, drawing on specialist expertise in paediatric ophthalmology, adult strabismus, and cerebral visual impairment (CVI). My work includes the assessment of visual consequences from brain-based injuries such as concussion, stroke, brain tumors, infections, and other brain-related visual impairments, including strabismus, amblyopia, and double vision.
With over four decades of extensive clinical and research experience within my chosen scope of practice, both in the UK and internationally, I am able to provide evidence-based, detailed assessments and expert opinions. I have also led a sight-saving charity and a teaching organisation, ensuring my work has a meaningful impact on patient care.
Assessments include detailed history-taking, eye examinations, and functional vision evaluations, and reports cover diagnosis, prognosis, functional impact, and visual challenges. They are prepared for use in legal proceedings, insurance matters, and determining eligibility or safety for participation in daily life, education, or sports.
Expert reports are designed to be clear and actionable, supporting solicitors, insurance providers, and other decision-makers. I take a collaborative approach, engaging with families, carers, and relevant specialists to ensure findings are practical and patient-centered.
For complex cases, I am experienced in providing representation and testimony at tribunals or hearings. Each report prioritizes the individual’s well-being and capabilities, ensuring informed decisions are made in their best interest.
Note: If surgery is needed at any stage, patients are fully supported in choosing any surgical provider they prefer.
