


Mr Chandna
With over 30 years of international clinical, surgical, academic, and leadership experience, Mr Chandna now specialises exclusively in the assessment and management of complex visual disorders—including cerebral visual impairment (CVI); acquired brain injury; strabismus (eye misalignment), amblyopia (“lazy eye”) in children and adults.
Clinical Leadership & Research
Mr. Chandna’s clinical and academic career bridges top hospitals and research institutes in the UK and USA. While department head, research director, and senior scientist, he set standards in paediatric and neuro-ophthalmic care, shaped clinical pathways, and developed diagnostic tools now used worldwide. His work is referenced in international guidelines and major review papers.
Mr. Chandna led the Paediatric Ophthalmology Department at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, UK for 26 years and subsequently was Senior Clinician Scientist at SeeLab and Chief, Clinical Vision Research at Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, San Francisco, USA for 11 years. He now continues within the NHS at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool UK with his specialist clinical research work in complex visual disorders and as Teaching Faculty at the Eye Institute, California Pacific Medical Centre, San Francisco, USA.
Throughout his career, Mr. Chandna has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles and delivered keynote and eponymous lectures internationally. He has been Lead investigator on a 5-year CVI research grant funded for SKERI by National Institute Disability Learning Living Rehabilitation (NIDLLR) RR, a federal organisation, USA and several UK-based research grants. He has developed diagnostic tools and web-based assessment systems for visual function in children, now translated to clinical practice.
He was the founding trustee and Chair of Vision4Children, a charity that was dedicated to improving paediatric eye care worldwide through teaching, training and sustainable development. Mr. Chandna is the Founder Director of Eyelearn – a teaching, training, capacity building organisation – for paediatric ophthalmology teaching in the UK and conducts courses worldwide, wherever the need is the greatest. During his tenure at Smith Kettlewell, USA he held the position of a Director at the Board and was Chief of Clinical Vision Research.
He is deeply committed to supporting families, educators, and healthcare teams in understanding and managing complex visual challenges, providing individualised management plans and clear guidance for real-world functional outcomes. His approach is evidence-based, compassionate, and personalised for each patient and family.
